History of Harley Street
The Eighteenth Century was marked by its grandeur and opulence, which indeed resonates in the architecture of the Georgian period. Harley Street is demonstrative of this movement, with its grand facades, sash windows and stately marble staircases.
Originally, it was the luxuriousness of the buildings’ design, the great transport links and the central location which attracted medical professionals, including doctors and surgeons, to the area. These individuals then started treating patients from their homes, then establishing their own private medical practices.
By 1914, some 200 doctors practiced down Harley Street; the many blue plaques which pepper the walls in this area celebrate the work of figures such as Sir Henry Thompson, Florence Nightingale and Dr Edward Bach.
Presently, Harley Street remains to be a hub of medical excellence and innovation, renowned globally for its practice in medicine and aesthetics.
